Description
Although Saudi officials insist that their country is safe from popular uprisings that are shaking the Middle East, the kingdom will soon have to choose between establishing a constitutional monarchy or implosion, the Beirut-based pro-Iranian daily AL AKHBAR reported on March 11. "Saudi officials disseminate a theory that Saudi Arabia will remain safe from winds of revolutions blowing in the region, arguing that problems differ from one country to another. However, many princes have started calling for a wider vision (by the Saudi government), including initiatives and openness to face pending domestic issues and start discussing the establishment of a constitutional monarchy," the newspaper said. The same day the report appeared, a Friday, several hundred people protested in heavily Shiite eastern Saudi Arabia, but hundreds of policemen prevented protests in the capital calling for democratic reforms inspired by a wave of unrest sweeping the Arab world and the oil-rich kingdom will be safe.
